The variety was obtained as a result of a breeding program at the Polli Horticultural Research Centre between 1964 and 1985. The genetic basis of the variety consists of a combination of the forms «J. Aamisepa 5» and «Tartu Kaunitar».
The fruits of the variety have an elongated shape and a yellow-green color, the content of soluble solids is 7.8%. The variety is used in breeding research, in particular for studying resistance to diseases of the genus Monilinia.
Meristem plants of this variety are capable of producing abundant root suckers. «Amitar» is recognized as a significant achievement of Estonian breeding and is included in the lists of varieties recommended for local fruit growing.
