Kaukazinė slyva is not a variety of European plum (Prunus domestica) in the breeding sense. In official documents and agricultural registries, the name is classified as the biological species cherry plum or myrobalan plum.
The plant is widely used in horticulture as a rootstock for plum and apricot varieties due to its high winter hardiness and good compatibility. As a pollinator, the cherry plum is considered a universal option for many varieties of European plum.
Under this same name, commercial trade often offers ornamental forms with dark purple foliage, such as the Nigra or Pissardii varieties, which are grown for their appearance rather than for fruit characteristics.
