The variety is a chance seedling, which presumably originated from the hybridization of Japanese plum and cherry plum. The tree is characterized by vigorous growth and a spreading crown, reaching a height of 2.4–6 meters. Flowering occurs early, which poses a risk of flower damage from spring frosts.
The fruits are medium to large in size, round or conical in shape, with purple-red skin and juicy, sweet flesh with a tart tang. The variety is self-fertile, but requires fruit thinning to prevent branch breakage during heavy harvests. High susceptibility of the plant to black knot and moderate resistance to bacterial leaf spot are noted.
The fruits are consumed fresh and are also used for making jams, preserves, jellies, and desserts.
