The plant is a large shrub or tree 5–12 meters tall with a dense spherical crown. The leaves are rounded or heart-shaped, shiny, light green. In April–May, the tree is covered with white fragrant flowers in umbellate inflorescences.
The fruits are small drupes up to 1 cm in diameter, changing color from yellow to black as they ripen. They have a bitter taste, but the kernels contain aromatic substances and are used for the production of the spice mahlab.
The species is characterized by high drought tolerance, heat resistance, and the ability to grow on dry calcareous soils. The plant is winter-hardy and is widely used in landscape design to create hedges and as a reliable rootstock for fruit trees.
