The Pyriam rootstock was selected for its pronounced resistance to fire blight caused by Erwinia amylovora and to pear decline. It adapts well to cultivation in soils with high lime content, where other rootstocks, particularly quince, may show signs of chlorosis and stunted growth.
Plants grafted onto this rootstock are characterized by moderate vigor, forming more compact trees compared to vigorous seedlings, but larger than those on certain dwarf quince rootstocks. The material is characterized by good propagation ability, making it suitable for use in nurseries.
