Pyrus betulaefolia is a deciduous tree reaching 7.5–10 meters in height, with a crown containing thorny shoots. The plant's leaves resemble birch leaves in shape. The fruits are very small, 5–15 mm in diameter, are considered inedible, and have limited use in some alcoholic beverages in Asia.

In horticulture, the species is valued for high drought tolerance, adaptability to various soil types, and immunity to pear decline, as well as moderate resistance to fire blight. The plant's primary use is as a rootstock for cultivated varieties and participation in breeding programs for transferring resistance traits.
