In German-language and European pomological literature, the term Zapfenbirne ("cone-shaped pear") serves as a collective folk name for a number of old varieties possessing a characteristic conical or elongated fruit shape. The name is often applied as a synonym for the well-known old variety Curé (Poire du Curé, Pastorstbirne, Vicar of Winkfield), and sometimes also refers to the Epargne variety and other local forms.

Since this is not a registered breeding variety, the characteristics depend on the specific plant. If the Curé variety is implied under this name, then the tree is vigorous, long-lived, and undemanding. The fruits have a mass of 200–350 g, a greenish-yellow color, juicy sweet-and-sour flesh, and mature in the winter period from November to January.
