Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The variety is a vigorous tall bush 1.5–1.8 meters high with a moderately spreading crown and dense foliage. The branches are strong, however, due to the peculiarities of the crown shape, the bush may require support.
The berries are large, weighing from 1.1 to 3.3 g, have a round shape and shiny black skin. The variety has high winter hardiness, withstanding frosts down to -35 °C, and is resistant to anthracnose, septoria leaf spot, and reversion virus. At the same time, susceptibility to powdery mildew and moderate resistance to blackcurrant bud mite and columnar rust are noted.
