Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The variety forms a strong, fast-growing, semi-spreading bush 100 to 150 cm in height. The berries are large, weighing up to 3.5 g, round-elongated in shape, black with a matte finish, and gathered in long racemes. The fruit skin is firm, separation is dry, and the taste is sweet-sour with a pronounced aroma.
Fruiting occurs in two stages: the first harvest wave ripens in the second ten-day period of July, the second — at the end of August. Yield is up to 3 kg per bush per fruiting stage. The variety is distinguished by high winter hardiness and resistance to diseases, in particular to powdery mildew, and has a universal purpose.
