The name Himalaya is traditionally assigned to the species Rubus armeniacus Focke, also known as Rubus procerus. The plant is a vigorous shrub with vigorous thorny canes of arching form.

The berries are large and have a dessert sweet-and-sour flavor; their ripening period can last up to six weeks. Due to its marked aggressiveness and thorniness, the variety is rarely used in modern commercial plantings, but it has been used in breeding as a source of large fruit size and disease resistance.
