The variety Johan is a perennial forest rye, classified as a Secale cereale x Secale montanum hybrid, sometimes referred to by the synonym Secale cereale var. multicaule. The plant possesses exceptional winter hardiness, withstanding temperatures down to -25°C, and high disease resistance, requiring no chemical protection.
The development type is characterized by rapid initial growth even in drought conditions and intensive tillering. The variety is usually cultivated as a biennial crop, providing abundant green mass in the first year and a harvest of small grain or pasture forage in the second year.
The plant is used as green manure for improving soil structure, protecting against erosion, and preventing nitrogen leaching. It is also used to create forage for wild animals, biogas production, animal feed, and is suitable for use in baking.
