The name Vårråg encompasses various spring rye accessions preserved in genetic resource archives. These are predominantly old landraces and evolutionary populations that were historically cultivated in the regions of Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
The plants are characterized by great stem height, which can exceed two meters. The crop is marked by high trait variability due to cross-pollination and potential issues with grain filling. Historically, spring rye was used for baking, as well as a cover crop or livestock feed.
