The Buchan variety was developed at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). It is a sister clone to the Othello and Derek varieties, sharing the Croft and Cara varieties as common parents.
The plant has genetic resistance to the potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis), pathotype Ro1. In literature, this variety should be distinguished from the historical variety named Buchan Beauty, which is a separate breeding form.
