Lopen musta is not an independent breeding variety, but belongs to the maatiainen category, which means a local or heirloom variety. Various forms of potatoes with dark blue, purple, or almost black skin, cultivated in Scandinavia since the 18th century, may be hidden under this name.
This potato does not have botanical characteristics recorded in agronomic reference books, such as maturity group or disease resistance indicators. It is recognized as an object for the conservation of genetic diversity and is valued as a part of historical cultural heritage for the preparation of traditional dishes.
