Ricciona di Napoli is a local potato ecotype that formed as a result of long-term folk selection and adaptation to Italian cultivation conditions. The variety does not have a clearly documented history of breeding and origin.
In agronomic and physiological terms, the variety demonstrates high susceptibility to physiological disorders, in particular internal brown spots and roughness of the tuber surface. These defects significantly affect the commercial appearance and suitability of the harvest for processing.
In addition to its use in traditional Italian cuisine, this potato is actively used as a model object in scientific research dedicated to biotechnologies, in vitro tissue cultivation, and the study of mechanisms for the emergence of parenchymal tissue defects in tubers.
