The variety belongs to a group of spelt varieties that appeared in Switzerland in the 1990s. Studies from the late 1990s recorded plant density figures, for example, 433 plants per m² in 1997.
The variety did not receive approval from processors and consumers due to differences in taste and technological qualities compared to highly valued varieties such as Oberkulmer Rotkorn and Ostro. In scientific publications, Sertel is used as an object for genetic research and analysis of protein composition, where the similarity of its profile to the Ostar variety is noted.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
