The variety was bred in the 1970s and gained popularity among farmers in the western part of Croatia. In addition to grain yield, the crop was valued for the high quality of its straw, which was traditionally used as bedding for farm animals.
In scientific literature, the variety is studied in the context of genetic diversity; specifically, the presence of a 190-bp allele at the Xgwm261 locus has been recorded. Evaluations of the bread-making properties of the variety's flour vary in different studies from mentions of insufficient strength to data on high gluten strength potential.
