The GK Kunsag variety was obtained by crossing the GK Kincső and GK Mini Manó varieties, in some cases using a double backcross with GK Mini Manó. The variety name refers to the breeding line of the Cereal Research Non-profit Company institute, located in the city of Szeged.

In scientific literature, the variety is mentioned in the context of monitoring rust resistance genes. GK Kunsag is also widely used in biotechnological experiments, including the study of plant regeneration processes in tissue culture and callus formation.
