The variety belongs to winter durum wheat types. It was created during a breeding program aimed at improving cold hardiness, which included lines with genetic links to breeding programs in Odessa.

The plant is characterized by high yield, exceeding the performance of control varieties in state trials. It possesses high gluten quality indicators and an increased content of yellow pigments, making it suitable for pasta production.

In the scientific community, Martondur 1 is widely known as a model organism for experiments on anther and microspore culture in vitro, conducted for the purpose of producing doubled haploids.
