The Sandra variety is a spring soft wheat. In breeding work, it is used as a source of winter hardiness and resistance to a number of pathogens.

The plant possesses moderate resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus. The variety was used in specialized programs to improve resistance to Fusarium head blight.
