The Sava variety was developed in Yugoslavia at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. Its pedigree includes the influence of the Akakomugi variety.
The plant is a carrier of Rht semi-dwarf genes and was used as a model organism for studying vernalization and heading in wheat. The variety possesses drought tolerance characteristics.
