The variety is an important genetic resource in durum wheat breeding. It is a semi-dwarf plant with a pith-filled stem, which hinders the development of wheat stem sawfly larvae.

Biodur is used in breeding programs to develop new varieties with improved quality characteristics. The variety is also being researched as a genetic source for reducing cadmium accumulation in grain and is being studied for the concentration of yellow pigments, such as carotenoids.
