The Vergina variety was bred in Cyprus in 1986 using the backcross method between the American variety Lloyd and the Cypriot variety Karpasia. In terms of yield level and agronomic indicators, it is close to the Macedonia variety, but it differs by a higher grain test weight.
Due to less rigid gluten, the variety is suitable for the production of bread traditional to the cultivation region. In scientific literature, Vergina is also mentioned as a widely cultivated genotype in in vitro anther culture research, sometimes being classified as common wheat.
The right is granted for a limited term: propagation of the variety requires a license from the rights holder.
