The genetic origin of the Fercal variety is a complex interspecific hybrid: (Vitis berlandieri × Vitis vinifera cv. Ugni blanc) × (Vitis berlandieri cv. Rességuier n°2 × Vitis longii cv. Novo-mexicana). The vines have moderate vigor, which they impart to the scion. The variety requires trellising due to its tendency for active lateral shoot growth and the specific nature of its root system.
This rootstock is characterized by very high resistance to the root form of phylloxera and good resistance to the leaf form. It demonstrates outstanding lime tolerance, withstanding up to 60% total carbonate content in the soil. The variety develops best in fertile and moist sites, as it is sensitive to drought and certain fungal diseases, including downy mildew and powdery mildew.
