The variety belongs to wine grape types. The flower is hermaphroditic; the leaf is pentagonal, five-lobed, and deeply dissected. The clusters and berries are small in size. It is characterized as a low-yielding variety with a medium to medium-late ripening period. It is susceptible to downy mildew.

In winemaking, it is used in blends, for example, in the Béarn appellation. Wines from this variety are distinguished by a light color with a high tannin content. Known synonyms include Courbu Rouge, Courbut, Dolcedo, Dolceolo, and Noir Du Pays.
