The variety belongs to the third early ripening epoch and is characterized by good vigor with a semi-drooping growth habit of the shoots. The medium-sized bunches are conical or pyramidal in shape and of medium density. The berries are medium-sized, round or elliptical, black in color with an intense bloom.

The variety shows some resistance to powdery mildew and grey mold, but is sensitive to downy mildew, esca, and soil moisture deficit, which can lead to shriveling of the berry skin during the ripening period. The yield of the variety varies from medium to low.

Couston is used for winemaking and is considered a promising variety under changing climate conditions. It is included in the specifications of certain appellations, although its use in blends may be limited by regional regulations.
