The variety is of French origin and was historically common in the Pyrenees region. Currently, the main cultivation areas are in South Africa and Australia, where it was previously misidentified as Riesling. The name of the variety comes from a Gascon word meaning "crisp".

The vine is characterized by strong growth and rounded five- or seven-lobed leaves with pubescence on the underside. Bunches are small, conical, and compact. Small, rounded, whitish-green berries are covered with a waxy bloom. The variety belongs to the mid or mid-late maturity group.

The plant is sensitive to powdery mildew and downy mildew, and also has brittle shoots vulnerable to wind. Wines made from this grape are characterized by elegance, moderate structure, and aromas of anise, citrus, yellow fruits, and herbaceous notes.
