The name Loureiro Tinto is most often used as a synonym for the Mencia wine grape variety, although it appears in a number of specialized publications as a designation for a separate, poorly studied variety. It is important not to confuse it with the white variety Loureiro, as Loureiro Tinto is not a color mutation of it.

The variety is autochthonous to Galicia and Portugal and is considered a natural hybrid of Alfrocheiro and Patorra. The berries are small and round in shape. The variety is characterized as mid-late, showing sensitivity to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and gray mold.

The grapes are used for the production of aromatic wines, distinguished by fresh acidity and notes of red berries, such as raspberry and black currant, with the addition of herbaceous shades of thyme and mint.
