The variety has ancient origins and is presumed to originate from the Gironde region or the Basque Country. It is a genetic ancestor of the Carménère variety. Morphologically, it is characterized by medium-sized five-lobed leaves, compact clusters, and small or medium rounded berries. The vine is distinguished by its hard wood.

The variety is considered hardy: it possesses high resistance to gray mold and low sensitivity to powdery mildew, however, it is severely damaged by leafhoppers. It requires short pruning for stable yields.

It is used exclusively in winemaking, both as a single varietal and in blends. Wines from this grape possess good structure, expressive tannins, and aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry, violets, as well as spicy or herbaceous notes.
