A variety of French origin, historically distributed in the Languedoc, Rhône Valley, and Provence regions. It is also known by the synonyms Piquepoul Noir, Picpoul noir, and Pical Negro. It is a relative of the Piquepoul blanc variety.
Vines are medium-vigorous with bisexual flowers. Leaves are medium to large, rounded, three- or five-lobed, bright green with bristly-webby pubescence on the underside. Clusters are medium, cylindro-conical, and dense. Berries are medium-sized, rounded or slightly oval, dark pink or dark-colored.
The variety is characterized by a yield of 50–70 c/ha and good shoot ripening. It is distinguished by its susceptibility to fungal diseases, in particular to Botrytis cinerea and powdery mildew. It is used exclusively in winemaking to create wines with floral aromas and high alcohol content.
