In scientific literature, Petit Sauvignon is mentioned as a disease-resistant wine grape variety obtained by Italian breeders from the Institute of Applied Genomics in Udine through the crossing of classic varieties with genetically resistant hybrids.

In broad commercial practice, the name is used as a marketing designation for wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc variety, indicating the style of the beverage. Also, in historical ampelographic documents, this term is sometimes found as a synonym or a clonal variation of the classic Sauvignon Blanc.
