The variety is of Balkan origin and is known to be genetically identical to the Croatian varieties Crljenak Kaštelanski and Tribidrag, as well as the American Zinfandel. The name Primitivo comes from the Italian primo, which indicates the early ripening of the berries.

The vine is highly vigorous. The bunches are conical in shape, often dense, with round dark blue berries prone to uneven ripening. The variety is characterized by low resistance to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew, and average winter hardiness down to -19…-21°C.

This wine grape variety is intended for the production of red wines and juices. Due to its ability to accumulate up to 30 Brix of sugar, the grape is used to create full-bodied, tannic wines with high alcohol content.
