The variety is of ancient origin and is predominantly distributed in the Castile and León region in northwestern Spain. The plant's leaves are large, five-lobed, and deeply incised. The bunches are characterized as small and compact, having a cylindrical or conical shape. Small spherical berries with dark blue, almost black skin possess thick skin and soft, colorless pulp.
The grape belongs to late-maturing varieties and shows high drought resistance, adapting well to a hot climate. Agrotechnics allow for training vines both on trellises and in the traditional form of low-growing bushes, with the variety requiring careful pruning.
Intended exclusively for winemaking, it provides wines with an intense color with purple hues, high acidity, and pronounced aromatics with notes of berries and licorice. It is used both for creating varietal wines and in blends with Mencía or Tempranillo varieties.
