The variety is an interspecific hybrid, obtained in 1944 by crossing Oberlin S.P. and Foster’s White Seedling. It belongs to the PIWI category, as genetic material from wild Vitis riparia grape species was used during its development to increase disease resistance.

Wine from this variety has a greenish-yellow color and an extractive consistency. The taste and aroma may contain undesirable strawberry notes and a characteristic foxy flavor, which has limited the spread of the variety in commercial winemaking compared to later breeding developments from the Geilweilerhof Institute.
