The variety originates from the southeast of France, from the Rhône Valley, and has been known since the mid-16th century. It is a technical variety that is officially permitted for use in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where it is used in small quantities.

The plant belongs to mid-to-late ripening varieties with late bud break. It has large, dense clusters and dark-skinned berries of a blue-black color with a brownish hue. The leaves of the variety are distinguished by a characteristic silvery sheen.

The variety has high sensitivity to diseases such as downy mildew and gray mold. Wines based on this variety are distinguished by moderate alcohol and acidity content, imparting spicy, peppery notes and a rustic character to the finished product.
