The variety is a natural hybrid, has a mid-late maturity group and is characterized by medium vine vigor. Leaves are large, rounded, three- or five-lobed, with felt-like pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium-sized, dense, cylindrical in shape, often winged. Berries are small, rounded, acquiring a reddish hue upon ripening.
The variety is sensitive to winter frosts and spring frosts, susceptible to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), but tolerates drought and calcareous soils well. Zierfahndler wines are distinguished by a pronounced spicy aroma with notes of nuts, almond, honey and exotic fruits, as well as a high level of acidity.
