The name originated in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions after the phylloxera infestation, when imported vines from Bordeaux, including Carménère, were often mistaken for Cabernet Franc due to the external similarity of the leaves and clusters. Local winegrowers called it a local Cabernet, which eventually transformed into Cabernet Italiano.
In official European grapevine variety catalogs, Cabernet Italiano is recognized as a synonym for Carménère. This is not the result of breeding, but the result of a long-standing botanical error. Since it is the Carménère variety, it belongs to industrial wine varieties with corresponding morphological traits and is considered late-ripening.
