Variety description

The variety is considered autochthonous to central Italy, particularly to Tuscany. DNA analyses indicate a genetic relationship with the Sangiovese variety. The ripening period is characterized as mid-late or late.

The grapevine leaf is round, three- or five-lobed, with dense pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium-sized, compact or very compact. Berries are medium-sized, oval, dark purple in color, and covered with a thick waxy bloom.

The variety has high and stable yields; it prefers hilly terrain and well-drained calcareous soils. The plant is not resistant to frost and fungal diseases such as downy mildew and grey mold. Short pruning of vines is not recommended.

Wines from this variety are characterized by elegance, full body, and pleasant acidity. The aromatics are dominated by hints of cherry, plum, and wild berries.
