The variety originates from the Liguria region, specifically from the Cinque Terre and Arcola areas. After the phylloxera epidemic in the early 20th century, it was considered virtually lost; at present, the variety is being restored, and its genetic profile is recorded in Italian databases.

Ruzzese is a wine grape variety traditionally used to produce dessert wines with floral and citrus aromas, as well as pronounced minerality. The variety requires specific cultivation conditions characteristic of the Ligurian terraced landscape.

Molecular genetic studies confirm that this variety is not related to the white Piedmontese variety Rossese bianco or the red Ligurian variety Rossese di Dolceacqua.
