The variety is native to Croatia and is a black wine grape variety. It is not a product of directed breeding but was formed historically as part of local genetic diversity.

This variety is actively studied within the framework of ampelographic and genetic programs. In particular, research was conducted to evaluate the state of collection plantings for the presence of viral infections, including grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV).
