Raspberry Anthracnose

Rubus idaeus L.

A fungal disease of raspberries caused by the ascomycete fungus Elsinoe veneta, affecting all above-ground plant organs. It is characterized by the appearance of sunken ulcers with purple margins on the canes and necrotic spots on the leaves, leading to the drying of berries.

In the reference 20 varieties crop Red raspberry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is Elsinoe veneta, whose anamorph stage is known as Sphaceloma necator. The infection affects canes, leaves, petioles, fruit spurs, and fruit. In late spring, small, round, purple spots form on young canes, which eventually become sunken, forming ash-gray ulcers with a characteristic purple border. During intense disease development, the ulcers coalesce, causing cracking and necrosis of the tissue.

Small spots 1–3 mm in size, grayish-white or brown with a dark halo, appear on the leaves, leading to necrosis and premature leaf drop. Infected fruit become deformed, lopsided, turn brown, and mummify. Breeding for resistance is conducted by evaluating field resistance in points, as immune varieties do not exist and specific resistance genes to this pathogen have not been identified in raspberries.
