Anthracnose of Red Clover

Trifolium pratense L.

A fungal disease of red clover caused by Colletotrichum trifolii, leading to stand thinning and significant losses in green mass and seed yield.

In the reference 42 varieties crop Red clover, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen is the fungus Colletotrichum trifolii, which persists in crop residues, plant tissues, and seeds. Pathogen development is favored by high humidity, temperatures ranging from +15 to +25 °C, high soil acidity, and dense sowing.

Symptoms of the infection appear on all plant organs. Dark streaks develop on cotyledons and seedling stems, leading to the death of young plants. On mature plants, sunken brown lesions with black margins form, making the stems brittle. A netted pattern appears on the leaves, flower heads look scorched, and seeds become shriveled.

Breeding red clover for resistance to anthracnose is conducted using environmental selection methods under artificial inoculation conditions. No specific resistance genes or division of the pathogen into established genetic races have been identified for the crop in current research.
