Cultivation
Pelargonium zonale (L.) L'Hér.
The primary method of propagating Pelargonium zonale, which allows for the preservation of varietal characteristics in double and rosebud forms. It is characterized by a high rooting rate compared to regal pelargoniums and the ability to develop a root system over a wide time frame.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Horseshoe pelargonium, where this is mentioned in the description.
For propagation by cuttings, apical or intermediate stem shoots are used, with the cut made directly below the node. The optimal medium for root formation consists of loose, well-drained substrates, while it is important to maintain a temperature of about 20°C and avoid overwatering, which is the primary risk factor for stem rot.
The rooting process takes from 10 to 30 days, and the period from cutting to the onset of flowering is 60–90 days. Although Pelargonium zonale is capable of rooting year-round, the best results are achieved in the spring. Winter propagation is characterized by a twofold slowdown in root formation rates and requires the provision of artificial lighting.
