Peach Phytophthora root rot manifests as root and crown rot caused by oomycetes of the genus Phytophthora. The disease affects the root system and the crown area, leading to stunted growth, chlorosis, necrosis under the bark, and potential tree death.

The pathogens responsible for the disease are soil-borne Phytophthora cactorum, Phytophthora cinnamomi, and Phytophthora cambivora, which actively develop in waterlogged soil conditions. The infection affects the roots and the root collar area, manifesting as stunted growth, yellowing and dropping of leaves, and gradual or sudden wilting of the tree.

During tissue diagnosis in the affected area, a reddish-brown discoloration of the cambium is observed under the bark with a clear boundary between healthy and diseased tissue. Sunken lesions, accompanied by gummosis, may form on the trunk base. Specific resistance genes or pathogen races for peach have not been described; therefore, management is based on using less susceptible rootstocks and improving soil drainage.
