Potato maturity group

A varietal characteristic of potatoes that determines the duration of the period from planting to the physiological maturity of the haulm or the formation of a marketable yield.

The classification of varieties is based on the number of days from planting to haulm senescence: very early varieties mature in less than 80 days, early in 80–90, mid-early in 90–100, mid-season in 100–110, mid-late in 110–120, late in 120–130, and very late varieties require more than 130 days. Biological readiness is also assessed by the sum of effective temperatures above 10°C: early and mid-early varieties require 1000–1400°C, mid-season varieties 1400–1600°C, and late groups up to 2200°C.

The choice of maturity group influences agrotechnical strategy: early varieties allow for avoiding late blight epiphytotics and harvesting within a tight timeframe, while late-maturing varieties have better storage quality due to the accumulation of dry matter and the completion of a deep physiological dormancy period. A diversity of maturity groups in a farming operation is necessary to optimize machinery utilization, distribute harvest schedules, and meet the needs for processing or long-term storage.
