Clubroot of crucifers — White cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (White Cabbage Group)

A fungal disease of white cabbage caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, manifesting in the formation of hypertrophied growths on the root system.

In the reference 41 varieties crop White cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is a specialized soil-borne parasite, Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin, characterized by high intraspecific variability. The pathogen is represented by numerous physiological races, including Pb:0, Pb:1, Pb:2, and Pb:3, which complicates the development of universally resistant hybrids, as plants may be infected by new or rarely occurring strains.

Symptoms of infection on the roots of white cabbage are expressed in the formation of growths, swellings, and galls up to 10 cm in diameter. As the disease progresses, root tissues turn brown and decay, which leads to a disruption of plant nutrition, manifesting in leaf yellowing, stunted growth, and the inability to form a full-sized head.

In white cabbage breeding, resistance to the pathogen is classified as 'clubroot resistance'. Despite the availability of genetic research, specific resistance genes in commercial variety passports are used less frequently than in Chinese cabbage genetics, and breeding efforts are focused on the introgression of resistance sources.
