Bearded irises require maximum light and well-drained soils, with their rhizomes placed horizontally on the surface to be warmed by the sun. In contrast, beardless species, such as Siberian and swamp irises, prefer moist and acidic environments with the rhizome planted at a depth of 4–6 cm.

In bed design, irises are valued for the graphic shape of their sword-like leaves, which create vertical fans. Due to their short flowering period, they are combined with companion plants that hide the fading foliage. When planting, it is important to maintain intervals of 15 to 50 cm and orient the leaf fan to the north to avoid shading the rhizome, as well as to completely exclude the application of fresh manure to prevent rot.
