Cultivation

Container culture of Agapanthus

Agapanthus L'Hér.

Agapanthus requires a limited container volume to stimulate flowering, as excess space encourages vegetative growth at the expense of flower stalks. Successful cultivation requires maintaining a balance between root density and regular fertilization, with essential drainage.

In the reference 40 varieties crop Lily of the Nile, where this is mentioned in the description.

Container culture is a recommended strategy for Agapanthus. A key feature is the dependence of flowering on substrate volume: in overly spacious conditions, the plant actively builds green mass, whereas moderate root restriction promotes the reproductive phase. However, excessive root binding eventually hinders water and nutrient uptake, so the plant requires repotting no more than once every 2–4 years.

Care in a container requires accounting for the plant's high center of gravity, which implies using heavy substrates or drainage for stability. During the active growing season, the crop requires intensive watering, while water stagnation is detrimental to the fleshy roots. Nutrient requirements are met by fertilization with an emphasis on potassium and phosphorus, with low nitrogen content.

The container method allows for overwintering the plant in climates with cold winters by moving containers to cool rooms with a temperature of 6–8°C. During the dormant period, watering is limited to avoid drying out the root ball, and fertilization is completely stopped until the beginning of the growing season.
