Cultivation
Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck
A method of growing oranges in a limited volume of soil, which allows for temperature regulation and provides plant mobility for successful fruiting in temperate climate conditions.
In the reference 14 varieties crop Sweet orange, where this is mentioned in the description.
When growing an orange tree in a container, it is critical to maintain the temperature regime: in summer, the plants are kept outdoors, and when temperatures drop below +7...+10°C, they are moved to bright rooms for a 'cold' dormancy. Active growth and the formation of fruit-bearing shoots require the use of specialized breathable soil mixes that prevent moisture stagnation and root rot, as well as regular pruning to control the size of the crown.
In indoor conditions, the orange tree may require hand pollination, as the lack of insects reduces fruit set. A specific feature of this crop is the long fruit ripening period, which reaches 8–12 months; as a result, flowers and fruits at different stages of maturity may be present on the tree simultaneously. To accelerate the onset of fruiting, which takes 1–2 years for grafted seedlings, it is preferable to use vegetatively propagated planting material.
