Triticum durum Desf.
A complex of soil-borne diseases caused by fungi of the genera Fusarium, Bipolaris, Ophiobolus, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia. Durum wheat is characterized by increased susceptibility to common root rot compared to soft wheat.

The disease manifests as browning and rotting of seedlings, coleoptiles, primary and secondary roots, and the tillering node, which often leads to seedling death. In adult plants, the infection is expressed by dark brown spots and streaks on the basal part of the stem, signs of root decay, whiteheads, and shriveled grain.
The genetic control of resistance to root rots in durum wheat is characterized as a quantitative trait. The use of the Fhb7 gene, introgressed from Thinopyrum ponticum, is known to provide complex resistance to Fusarium infections, including root rot.
